The Aesthetics of Cooking
Cooking is a craft, the way it's presented can be an art. How the food was presented never used to matter to me so much as whether or not it was good. As I'm getting older, I'm beginning to appreciate that the aesthetics of how food is presented can affect the way taste buds perceive it. When I cook for my girlfiend, I do pay more attention to how the food looks, as opposed to just slopping it all down on the plate and saying 'Enjoy!' Yes, she is lucky.
At least once a week we try to eat vegetarian, and as far as looks go I like this meal's appearance. The colour choice, the textures, the knowledge that the only animals harmed during the making of it were the ones that got hit by the truck transporting the beans from the canning plant - all of it adds a little more to the meal than just the taste would provide by itself.
The recipe is simple, just green pepper, red kidney beans, black beans, tomato, whatever spices you like, and finally corn. Add heat. Done when hot.
