Fearless Assymetry
I adopted a kitten from the Humane Society at the end of December, and I think the coloration on kittens and cats fall into the artistic/aesthetic category because I can't see exactly what functional purpose it serves. Domestic cats really only blend into their surroundings by accident; their fur is either the result of breeding or random genetic variation, and either way serves more of an aesthetic than useful function.
Here are some 'artistic' shots of Chairman Meow, he's got a great squiggly/ratty mane on him, which visually I think is quite neat. And yes, Chairman Meow as in Chairman Mao. Second place name choice was Edward R. Purrow, but I figured I'd get even more confused looks at that name.
